why is it tapping or knocking?

i knew my car had an exhuast leak but now there is another noise....it sounds like a loud tapping....it isn't always there but in higher rpms or sometime idle it is there....it comes and goes...at first i thought i threw a rod....then maybe it was my lifters which i think it might be but i'm not too sure...i don't wanna replace one thing and then it end up being something else....so any ideas? or comments? if i can't get any answers i'm not taking any risks and replaceing the engine before i waste more money and blow the dam thing.

You have it backwards, it's setting the valve lash.

When is the last time you "adjusted" the lifters?


Jacked the engine up lately, sorta like a bent oil pan?

Get yourself one of those automotive stethoscope things and pinpoint the noise.
