Vacuum. All the deflector doors are operated by vacuum solenoids. If you find out you need some, let me know, I got three or four for sale.

This is a common thirdgen problem. In my case, the selector itself was leaking. Stick your ear to the HVAC controls. If you can hear a hiss, you've probably located your problem. If not, a search will help.

Where in Kansas?

I'm 13 miles from the Nebraska line. Lived in Wichita for several years while attending WSU--long ago and far away.

If the hvac looses vacume for any reason it will default to defrost for safety reasons.

If you dont hear any hissing in the console start fishing for the line that runs to the engine.
