idle problem

this one might be tough to explain...

half the time on a cold start, the engine light comes on and the car is idleing at 1200-1500. so, when you put it in gear the tranny suffers. Plus when you come to a stop, the brakes are suffering cause the car wants to pull forward(cause of the high idle)
i dont have a code reader and dont wanna pay an hours labour for it either.

help now

If you have an '82-'92 Firebird or Camaro, which I'm assuming you do because you're on a thirdgen camaro/firebird website, then you don't need a code reader to get your codes. Find your ALDL box located under the right side of the steering wheel and remove the cover. Take a paper clip and make a U shape out of it and plug each end of the paper clip into the top two terminals on the top row, far right. Once that's in place turn your key to the ON positions, do NOT start the car. With the key in the on position watch your Service Engine Soon light. All codes are two digits and the light flashes the appropriate number of times for each digit. 12 is normal and will flash first.. you'll see one flash for 1 and then a short pause and then the light will flash twice for 2... that's code 12. It will do this 3 times and then it will start flashing the codes that are stored in the ECMs memory. Count the number of flashes to get the two digit code. The trouble codes will flash 3 times as well and then move on to the next code if there is more than one. If not then it will start flashing code 12 again to let you know that's all the codes. Take the code(s) that you got using this method and either A. look them up in a Haynes or Chiltons manual or B. Call your local parts store and they should be able to look the code up for you.

To clear all codes from your ECM, unplug the battery and leave it unplugged for a couple minutes... this will clear all codes. If you unplug your battery before you start to extract codes then you will NOT be able to get your codes from the ECM. If this happens then start the car and wait for the SES light to come on again and then shut the car off and then extract the codes.

If it's cold, the computer is going to make the engine rev higher anyways.

However, it might be a good idea to check the TPS and the IAC. There's a technical article about this.

it flashed 32, 33, 34, 46 and 52.
im guessing that there are old codes in there and have just disconnected the battery. i guess the only thing to do is wait for a code to show and plug in the jumper wire...
