Tips on rear shock install........

I have already put new struts on my car. I hear the shocks are a little easier to do. I ordered Lakewood 50/50 drag shocks. Is the install pretty-straightforward? How should I jack the car up and what end of the shock should be removed first?

Do them one at a time and loosen the bottom end first. Don't take the bolt out, just loosen it so you can spin it freely with your fingers. Then do the top. Pull it out and reverse the procedure. I think the bottom bolts go to 60 lb ft and the top to 15. Very easy job. The only thing that pained me was getting the carpet back in straight.

Raise the car by the diff with a hydraulic jack, place jackstands right in front of the rear control arms, on the "pads" there. Then, after you break the lower shock bolts free (might need a back-up open-ended wrench on the other side to keep the bolt from spinning), start lowering the axle slowly. You'll find a "sweet spot" where the lower bolts just "push" out of the axle; you might need a slight tap with a hammer. (You shouldn't be pounding them out.)

I thought the lower shock-to-axle bolts got 90 ft/lbs torque?

Carpet tip- if you don't mind the extra work, remove your rear folding seat-back with a 10mm socket & ratchet (one nut in each extreme corner). Then remove the rear seat bottoms with a 10mm socket- they each have one bolt holding the bottom to the floor, at the "front center" of the seat bottoms. The backs of the seats are held with velcro to the rear cargo-area carpet. With the seats out, it's much easier to work with the carpet- and it only takes 5 minutes to undo the seats. Just remember not to put the seat-bottoms back in so they cover up the seat belts!
