ok i have been tring to get my timng right on my new engine and when i advance it to 10 deg advanced with the est unhooked and when i check it, it goes to somthing like 20 deg retarded or more when i hook it back up. and i have surging problems and doesnt seem to like it, it seems like it is picking up knock or somthing because it retardes it tooo much. and i have heard that spark can do that, but when i set my timing without using the est wire unhooked, and advanced to justt to 0 it will idle great and is very smooth, BUT it boggs really bad and and when i try to push 1/4 throttle it makes a big clacking noise and sometimes dies and sometimes it saves itself. and if i put it back retarded it willl not do that but it will have the surging problems but it willl not bogg nearly as bad.... ??? any clues becasue i am lost

 

sounds to me like the est is working, also sounds like you have knock and it's changing your timing too much. maybe a loose rocker, too much cam, or need more octane

i thought valve train could not mess up the knock sensor to set it off, and the octang should be more than good engouh get the best kind and dont have extreme compression. cam its fine its not to big

well i have made things even more complicated. i have unpluged my kock sensor and it still retards it... and it will go back to normal when the est wire is unhooked with knock sensor or without knock sensor.
and if it helps any i dont have a egr
