Solid lifter cam

My engine builder told me that he's going to put a solid lifter cam in my car with 510 lift on it. Is this cam going to be powerful and what's all involved with these cams, i don't know too much info about them other than you have to adjust the valves every now and then. I am trying to build this engine to go 12's in the 1/4 mile, so is this a good cam for my engine. Thanks for the replies

More info is needed like duration at .050 on the intake and exhaust and the Lobe separation angle. Not slamming the engine builder but I question the use of the 305 heads and the money that has been spent on them when ultimately the valves are shrouded by the larger bore. That is not the best way to get into the 12's I know of.My hopes would be this is just a plan and no money has been spent yet.

solid lifter cams need the lash set every 3,000 miles, also they make a LOUD clicking. they do make more power then a hydrolic, but i also agree this builder seems a little shady, just dropping off a engine and say "ok, make it run 12's" usally isnt a good idea. its better to plan it out yourself.

Yeah, the heads are circle track race heads, but he told me the engine is about 400 horsepower all together.

Tempest68, I take it you own a 68 pontiac tempest? I just got done parting one out for my 68 GTO. Nice car, I wish we could have saved it, but in Illinois, rust had taken its toll on the car. Got any pics?

yeah, You need a website, you can email your pics to me and i will post them on my site, then you can post them from there.

Where in Illinois do you live? I'm from Peoria.

And what is all involved with setting the lash at 3,000 miles?

im in wheaton, about an hour or so from peoria, if your running a full roller rocker the cam card will list the hot last, and you set the rockers with a feeler gauge, probey take you about an hour or so, what i would do personally is stick with a hyrolic or go with a hydrolic roller if you want to step up to some big power and the price will be $$$ also. if you dont mind the noise and the lash setting then the solid will be ok, but if you like to just drive and not have a noisy engine go hydrolic, im sure you can get the power back elsewhere no problem
