solid flat tappet

Anyone have an opinion on them? I am building a 9.75:1 406 with cleaned up vortec heads, GMPP rpm type intake, 750 hp carb, 1.75 shorty headers and a 700R4. I just bought a 87 RX7 that I will be swapping this into with 4.10 gears and I was told these rears hold up very good. I was planning on using a XE274 cam but a friend of mine is trying to convince me to use the equivalent in a sft. Car will be driven at most a couple thousand miles a year. I understand the cam profile will be more agressive for the duration and he figures 20hp would be a good guess. Any suggestions?

Not only would I consider a solid cam but go with one a little bigger for you project.

I'd go with Comps XS282

I don't want to rev this thing more than 6200. I am looking for alot of torque for the street and also use it as a part-time 1/8 mile bracket car(hopefully mid 7's). I am following that article that Roger Helgeson had awhile back on how to port the vortec's. I am taking my time and they are looking good. F-bird are you using that cam, if so can you give me some idea on how it runs? I see you have vortecs on a 400.

You won't have to rev it high at all. A 400 with vortecs will eat up that cam easy. Peak hp will be just under 6000.

Right now I have the Hyd version Xe284. As yet haven't had the chance to track test it. The few times I had it out for a scoot seemed to want to be shifted about 5800-6000.
If I don't like it, a XS-282 is going in.
a Xs282 was on the short list when I was building it. But got a Xe284H given to me so....

I think in a light Rx7 with 4.10's you'd be undercammed with the Xe274 or the Xs 274 solid version.

i recommend the Xs-282...
