vette water pump possible use??

84 and later vettes use reverse-rotation aluminum short pumps. Around $50.00 at parts store (rebuilt). Weiand sells spacers to convert their short pumps to long. Anyone with experience or thoughts on this for a cheap aluminum alternative???
I think I will plug the bypass hole as well and drill the thermostat. Pros and cons???
Thanks,
Jack

Will have a vette pump on Monday and I think this will work-spacers need to be cut around 1/4 inch and shaft hole enlarged. Should cost around $80 to $90 total and allow one future replacement of pump locally. Stock pump weighs 12lbs---hope to lose 5 or so of that and remember the placement of that weight! Guess not a big deal to you all--

Heh.. I picked up a vette pump thinking I found a cheap alternative to aftermarket Al pumps. The one thing I didn't take into consideration is the fact that the casting has NO mounting bosses for accessory brackets! How the hell does a vette motor mount the accessories?!

Other than that, the pump looks like it would work, maybe on a race application where power accessories aren't needed. It pretty much looked like it would clear the timing cover as-is, although it would end up being very close.

Anybody wanna buy this pump of mine? e-mail me for details..

Have the pump in hand and I will make it work for sure. The 87 and later pumps have no mounting bosses as they are for the serpentine belt system and the vette pump will work for this application. Only problems are overall pump length and shaft diameter is larger---drill the pulley and use some spacers between block and pump. Looks like Chevy used 3 different lengths for pumps with the vette in the middle so using the Weiand spacers milled to proper length will work. The vette pump weighs in at 5.5lbs and has larger bearings and better impeller so this all is worth it I believe. At the same time I will plug the passage in the spacer for the thermostat bypass and drill the thermostat for a cooler running motor!
