Has anyone in the group had experience with DIY porting and polishing? I'm looking for some guidence on a good tool kit for each task and any pointers.

do a search. You'll read sitting bulls post, he has mentioned some tools.
off the top of my head:

die grinder, recommend electric with speed controller

3" and 6" long carbide burrs, tree or flame style. maybe a cylinder one too

mandrel for sanding drums
tapered sanding drums (mucho)
cross buffs, and mandrel for that.

That's basically all you need.

 

Don't forget Earplugs.

It is always nice to find a cheap, junk set of heads for you to get the feel of your tools and grinding on cylinder heads. When I went to port my heads it made me feel a lot more comfortable.

 

yea, for sure, and goggles. A shop vac would be needed sooner or later too (usually have one of those around), and good lighting.

I had some 993 heads, that I went at first. I didn't finish them, as they were just practice, but it showed me how the bits cut, etc.

Also think about what you'll be doing with the rocker studs too, if these are stock heads.
