305 driving problem
Hi, i was looking at a 1991 firebird with a 305 tpi and auto in it to buy recently. the owner has told me that there is a problem with the engine, if you start it up it runs great for a long time, but if you shut it off and try to start it again it will not turn over, just crank. according to him you need to wait a half an hour or until its cold to start it up again. the car has 178k miles and minor upgrades, CAI, chip, and 3" exhaust, any ideas on what would be causing this? and what am i looking at to fix it? i dont want to buy a crap car. thanks a lot guys for any help!

sounds like too much timing,or a really lean mixture,or the cooling system needs flushed?
that's a TON of miles for a sbc!it's not a toyota.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes

Sounds like it has a leaky injector, and those need to be taken off and sent to Rich at www.cruzinperformance.com for service.
Leave the timing alone. That's the newbie knee-jerk response to EVERYTHING; that, and EGR. Ignition timing won't cause that. Excess gasoline dripping out of an injector and into the manifold, will cause it.
I have one SBC in my driveway with 360k miles on it; a BBC with 275k on it; a Cadillac with 240k on it; I don't think 178k is very many miles at all. In fact, I think it's just getting broke in good.

I have 1 with 142k on it in new running condition, no reason a sbc can't live if serviced correctly just like anything else......
Btw i know a guy with 785k on a 350 sbc gen with only 1 rebuild (beat that hehe). Old man driver whos owned it for about 20 years but, still pretty kool.
