Oil Pressure Problems
Im having oil pressure problems. I have a 88 camaro with a 350. The car was originally a v6 car. The oil pressure sender I am using is for a 88 v8 with gauges.
The right wire is hooked up to it and I made certain to get no teflon tape over the end of the sender. What could be causing my problem? Do I need to use the sender from a 88 v6? Thanks

come on guys. Im sure im not the only person to ever put a v8 into a v6 car. What did you guys do to get the oil pressure gauge to work correctly without installing a mechanical gauge?

In fact, you don't even tell us if you're having an "oil pressure problem", or a "gauge problem". But it sort of smells like you're asking about a gauge problem, so I'll start there.
The 6-cyl gauge goes to 80 psi, and the sending unit is set up so that it reaches maximum resistance accordingly. The V8 gauge and sending unit are set up for 60 psi.
In other words, if you take either gauge, and hook up a 6-cyl sending unit, the gauge (the gauges themselves are electrically the same... only the lettering on the scale is different) will read full scale at 80 psi; and if you take either gauge and hook it up to a V8 sending unit, it will read full scale at 60 psi.
Just make sure the SU you are using matches the gauge you're using; i.e. if you have the 80 psi 6-cyl gauge still in the dash, use a 6-cyl SU, and if you've swapped to the V8 60 psi gauge, use a V8 sending unit.
If the motor doesn't have oil pressure in the first place, dinking around with the gauge won't help.

sorry, I guess I got carried away. Yes I am having a gauge problem. It doesn't register anything. It is pointing at 6 o'clock. So I need the sending unit from whatever the gauges are from. Makes sense. Maybe I somehow let a piece of teflon tape get over the sender. Thanks for the help. I guess I will just have to tear into it and see. Thanks

If it's pointing at 6:00, straight down, the gauge itself is probably hung up on something. It shouldn't be able to go that far counter-clockwise.

well I double checked and there is oil getting to the sending unit. The gauge is more at 5 o'clock instead of 6. IF the gauge is hung up will that be hard to fix? I am going to go take it apart right now and see. You dont reckon it could be hurt could it.

yall are great. Thanks for the help. I took the cover off the gauges, tapped the gauge and it worked perfectly. Well except that I am using a v8 sender with the v6 gauges. Doesnt bother me though. AS long as zero is still the same. Thats where all the trouble is! Thanks for all of your help.
