Sun shaped gear under rotor
Been trying to figure out why im not getting spark for a while.
Ground out coil, works, put spark plug on, and tap it to block when cranking, it sparks nice and white.
All wireing is hooked up, with new modual, and spare modual, no difference.
Though, when i installed the dizzy, i noticed something, the star/sun gear thing on top was cracked all the way from the center to the outside.
What is that thing, and would that cause me not to get any spark?
I did the poor mans fuel pressure check too, i got pressure.

I think the thing you are talking about is the pickup coil. The pickup coil sit at the base if the dizzy housing and connect to the module. It will cause you to not receive fire through the ing. system

se the 8 pointed sun-like thing on top, right under where the rotor would be?
That has a crack from the center out to the edge, straight across the radius of it.
That's the moving pole half of the reluctor assembly that generates a pulse in the pickup coil. Without it, there will be no control pulse from the pickup coiil to the HEI switching module, and therefore, no spark.
They do break on occasion. They usually cause misfiring or weak spark first, but can kill ignition just like yours.
I'd suspect rather than trying to replace the pole piece, a remanufactured distributor would be the fastest way to get it running again. Finding the parts can sometimes be difficult, and that may not be the only problem with the assembly. If it cracked, it's possibly due to interference with the stationary pole, and it may have been broken as well. That's usually a sign of a loose upper bushing, which would also have to be checked/replaced.
By the time you're done, a reman unit with a warranty might be cheaper and faster.
