how to adjust aftermarket cam

i put a new cam in my car is it a 465/488 lift. Is there a special way that i need to adjust the rockers, or should i go with what this book tells me and adjust the listed rockers when the car is at TDC and the rest when its 180 rotated. My buddy said i have to adjust them when the #1 psiton is firing or something...i just wanted to know if there was a specal way to adjust an after market cam...

And this fits into this post b/c my car doesn't run well with the new cam and i think my rocker arms are not adjust right...

any input would be greeeaaatttt!!!!! Thanks

You have to adjust each cylinder when that cylinder's cam lobes are on thier base cirlce. This means when both valves are closed. There are lots of ways to accomplish this.

You have the valve covers off anyway, so you can simply watch the valves. If you take the spark plugs out, and put your finger over the hole as you turn it over, you can feel the air pushing out. lets you know when the valves are closed.

I forgot to say, you can also do this while the engine is running. Either purchase some clips to deflect the oil, or cover as much of your stuff under the hood as possible. Start the engine with the valve cover off. Start at the front and back off the nut until it starts to tick. Tighten it up till it just stops and then add your preload. Some people go 1/2 turn, others more. I only go 1/4. Work your way down the line till they are done. Really, its probably the best way to be sure you have the perfect lash.

What lj said, and it's a lot easier to adjust it while running if you have a mechanics stethiscope (It isolates the sound from that particular rocker, instead of trying to listen over them all clacking.). They are only a few bux, I think I paid somewhere around 9 or 10 dollars for mine. I always start with the basics first though:
(copy and paste from "centuryperformance") I combine the intake and exhaust adjustment in the same step to avoid unnecessary rotating of the engine.

Intake Valve Adjustment: ENGINE OFF!

with #1 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #6 Intake Valve
with #8 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #5 Intake Valve
with #4 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #7 Intake Valve
with #3 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #2 Intake Valve
with #6 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #1 Intake Valve
with #5 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #8 Intake Valve
with #7 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #4 Intake Valve
with #2 cylinder Intake Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #3 Intake Valve

Exhaust Valve Adjustment: ENGINE OFF!

If you have noticed, this is the same procedure as the intake valves listed above, just that you are now adjusting the exhaust valves the same way.

with #1 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #6 Exhaust Valve
with #8 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #5 Exhaust Valve
with #4 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #7 Exhaust Valve
with #3 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #2 Exhaust Valve
with #6 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #1 Exhaust Valve
with #5 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #8 Exhaust Valve
with #7 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #4 Exhaust Valve
with #2 cylinder Exhaust Valve at full valve lift .... Adjust #3 Exhaust Valve

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
You adjust the rockers with that cam, the same as you do with any other cam.

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=344159 Do a search on that page for "EOIC", and follow the instructions. You could also watch for one valve to be at peak lift, and adjust the same valve (intake or exhaust) on the cylinder that's 4 positions (½ engine cycle) away from it in the firing order.
