Engine: Carb'd L31 Vortec 350
Transmission: 700r4
Axle/Gears: 4th gen torsen / 3.23
Replacing a head gasket.
Hey guys, I'm about to go pick up my 1987 Camaro RS in North Haven, CT. I live in Boston and the drives about two a half hour. The Camaro's head gasket needs to be replaced as coolant is leaking into the gasoline. I had two questions.
A) Would I be able to drive the Camaro from Connecticut to Massachusetts just so I can get it back here at my home where I can then fix the head gasket?
B) How much would it cost to have an mechanic replace the head gasket?

As far as driving the car back to Massechusettes, I don't even think that's remotely possible.
About changing the gasket...please don't take it to a mechanic to do that. A job like that, they will tear you a new one moneywise. Search around and learn the in's and out's of the engine and do it yourself. Even better, pick up a Chilton's or Hayne's manual for your car. There are step by step instructions on how to do something like that (along with tons of other jobs). It isn't that bad of a job at all (minus some clearance issues) but you don't have to take the engine out or anything. You have a great forum at your fingertips for help and advice, so I think you should utilize that to its full potential. Someone who has the correct knowledge can bang a job like this out in a couple hours.

Alrighty, thank you. Maybe I'll have it taken to my house on a flatbed or something. I do have a Haynes Manual, but I was under the impression the engine needed to be removed for the job. Thanks a lot for your advice, I'll talk to my father about doing the job ourselves and if any more problems arise, you're right, the board will be more than helpful.
