What harmonic balancer to use?
I had my 383 stroker built professionally and wander if I got the hose. I picked the motor up in the long block and put it in my self. I used my oil pan off of my stock 305, the crank rubbed the inside of the pan just a little bit so I hammered it out and it cleared with minimal clearance and no rub. Then when I fired it up it shook to beat h*ll. The rotating assembly was supposedly sent out to Dallas for balancing. It's a scat stroker kit from the crank to the pistons. Anyway, I drove it over to the shop that built the motor and the scratched their heads then swapped the harmonic balancer out with a stock 350 balancer and the engine smoothed out. My first thought was that if this is a true stroker it would need a 400 balancer. The builder said he called Dallas and the guy that balanced it said that the crank wanted to jump off his machine with a 400 balancer and was closer to balance with a 350 balancer so thats what he balanced it at. So I guess my question is, have any of ya'll ever ran a 350 balancer on a 383 stroker, or did I get hosed? By the way it was a $3500 engine and does run 12's in a full body daily driven thirdgen with the assistance of some nitrous.

Is it a one-piece rear main seal crank/block? Many such 3.75" cranks are internally balanced.
I would hope that the builder and balancer would know what they were working with.
That you had to clearance the oil pan is a pretty good indication it isn't a 3.48" stroke.
