max bore on 97 vortec 350
I have a vortec 350 out of a 97 truck. I had it checked out at a local machine shop, and it needed to go .060 over. Can I go ahead and bore it to this size? I was wondering because I heard you cannot stroke the newer small blocks either. I would like to get some extra cubes out of it. Any help is appreciated.

I don't think you can bore the later Vortec 350 blocks .060 over. I believe that even .030 to .040 over is pushing it. But i'm not sure.
Really i'd just scrap the block if it needs a .060 overbore. Its not worth spending money on a one time shot.

Use some logic. Ask one simple question.
What will the machine shop pay you for it?
If they'll give you more than you paid, then it'll probably go to whatever it needs safely; don't sell it to them, have them bore it.
If they won't pay you that much, or if they're not interested at all, then it's garbage.

Get them to sonic test the block. That will tell you how thickthe walls are. Problem solved, unless they don't have the equipment. In which case I would be looking for another machine shop anyway.
Has the block been bored previously? If it's still standard I find it hard to believe that it needs to go .060". Most irregularites will clean up at .020 or .030".
