issues with MSD distributor #8366

2 wires on the pickup coil-to-module wiring. MSD says the orange/black goes on "P" terminal of the module and the purple/black goes on the "N" terminal of the module. engine ran good and very responsive in the reverse order of that, but i called them to verify the proper wiring because of something unrelated, although the "bad" signal was being received thru the impulse reference wire from the distributor. when i reversed the coil wires per their direction, i cannot time and tune for crap. car barely wants to run, no throttle response to speak of, and when i can get it up on some power, i hear a loud pop that sounds like it's coming from the purge canister. i just don't understand this at all - it was running and tuning good with the wires supposedly backwards and now that i've "made them right", it runs like crap. but it did rectify the other unrelated problem - pretty amazing, huh? and to top it off, i gotta probably pull up the wire bundle behind the distributor tomorrow because something started smoking back there when, once again, it never was before... so, anybody else running this dist that can verify the correct coil-to-module wiring??? or have any good ideas of what the hell happened???

OK - i'm stumped... just pulled up the entire wire harness behind the distributor and no signs of a melt-down. opened it up and separated all the wires and once again, no signs. that's a good thing, i suppose, but also no signs of ANY type of fluid leakage on the rear area of the block and heads and trans. any clues as to what got the smoke to rise? i thought maybe the dist gasket itself, but appears to be OK, and had no signs of leakage anyways.
