The way those gears work, is you have multiple keyways; and you put the gear on using whichever keyway, such that the mark you want, is up.
I can tell looking at your pics, you're in the wrong keyway. Here's how you can get it right:
Turn the crank such that the keyway is pointed EXACTLY AT the center of the #1 piston. Then put the gear on the crank such that the 0 (whichever 0) is straight up. It will be super obvious which 0 looking mark is the right one.
That's all there is to it.

With the keyway on the gear/crank pointing up and 45* to the right (as viewed from the front of the engine) the "dot" for that keyway will point straight up. This is true for whichever keyway you have used on your lower gear.
circle = 0* advanced/retarded (i.e. straight up)
triangle = 4* advanced
rectangle = 4* retarded
circle = 0* advanced/retarded (i.e. straight up)
triangle = 4* advanced
rectangle = 4* retarded
