Ram air question - and K&N

Installed an open element, 3 inch tall, going to drop on my backup hood (metal one already cut way open), put a 5 inch tall element, make a ram air scoop, and seal it all underneath.

Kinda like someone posted here before, regarding cowl induction, a metal base underneath the air cleaner, and foam surrounding around the thing sealing it in, except for where the opening is (in that case cowl, i.e. windshield, in my case, facing forward, because of ram air scoop).

When it rains, one should close it, now my question is, would it have enough air during those times, by just using the airspace inside the foam surrounding ?

Or should I make an extra opening in the back, for a smaller backup cowl induction, to use when it's raining ?

Last thing, for some reason typing in "K&N" doesn't bring up any search results, so I'll ask it here.

K&N 14 inch round element, or any other cotton/gauze element, worth the money ? i.e. worth performance wise ? In the long run it'll be worth considering one initial cost vs new filters all the time, but does it really do anything to improve the performance ?

Alright guys, sorry for the novel, should have made a pic but I know you'll know what I mean.
