gas gauge going crazy

here's the problem, when i bought the car the gas gauge didn't work, sometimes it said there was gas, sometimes it was completely empty, and then it would go right to full. what seems to be my problem? did the float come loose or did my ground come off or is it a fuse? i thought it woule be nice to know just how much gas i have.

thanks,

ps. its in my 1991 rs convertible 305

I'm not sure how it is for the third gen, but for the 6000, I need to get a replacement (discontinued though) or get one of those aftermarket ones that reads 0 - 99 (digital). I'm told that those are thwe only ones that work with the GM sending unit.

Oh, might be the actual sending unit itself too

well ive never actually seen the indash guage go bad myself. first with the car running get under it and with a hammer lightly tap on the bottom of the tank, see it it starts working correctly.... if it doesnt im gonna have to put money on your sending unit being bad. although i thought that once and when i got the tank out i found the wire going to the sending unit had fell off of it. so anyways i still had to pull the tank.

Yes...I know it s extremely rare for the gauge itself to go bad.....just my luck that my gauge went bad!
