Engine suffix code location?

I think my block was decked at some point. I was trying to get the suffix codes and looked all over behind the AC bracketry. I could see clear down to the ground from one angle and saw nothing sticking out with numbers on it. I thought from some pictures I had found of the location there was a small platform that the numbers were stamped on. Are the numbers usually horizontal, like I would be looking down at them, or vertical, like on the face of the block? My heads line up perfect with the front of the block and it seems pretty smooth all the way down. Maybe I just missed it again in the third time of looking. I know I cant read the casting numbers at the back, theres too much sludge built up right now, and the factory wiring is in the way. Ill have to wait for warmer days when I can spend more than 20 minutes outside without freezing.

They're on the deck surface where it extends past the front of the passenger side head.

So, I'd be looking down at them right? I guess Ill have to pull the ac brackets to get a better look. I could have sworn it was all flush straight down, of course it was hard to see kneeling next to the hood latch (damn that hurts the knees...)
