Oil for a TPI 5L

Hi all, look I'm not sure if this has been covered before. I did a search and nothing came up.

I'm located in Australia, and have just bought my first Trans Am.

Just wondering, what weight and type of oil have you guy's had really good results with and / or bad?

Here in Australia, Mineral oil is preferred with most V8 engine guy's as they tell me it seems to work better with Rolla's.
The other thing is the allot of guy's are telling me to run heavy oils like 20w 50 and 20 w 60's.

Yes it is hot, and mostly always above 20 Deg Cell, but I'm really interested to see what you guy's have found works really well, and if you guy's have the same dislike for synthetics that most Aussie engine builders do.

I'm really keen to here form all of you.

Francis.

IMO synthetic is fine. I use it in everything, including V8s.

10W-30 is all you need. Thicker oil does no good unless the engine is built differently from stock tolerances.

Here in America, 20°C (about 68°F) is not considered "hot". I've lived in places where it will go for 6 months at a time and NEVER ONCE get that cold. 10W-30 synthetic works fine here.

There are untold millions of cars on the road today all over the world with engines that are as hard on their oil as Chevy V8s, or harder, running nice normal modern oil in the weight the factories are recomending. Somehow I don't think the factories would be specifying what they do, if it didn't work.

There are few topics that will excite more superstitionand bashing of one product or mfr or another and "I always heard" and "my friend [mechanic, daddy, racing buddies, whatever] said" and other such "logic", as what motor oil to use. It's gotta be the most commonly abused opportunity for obsession of any facet of car maintenance. You'll shortly have every unsubstantiated opinion you can imagine thrown at you. You're about to get an absolute firestorm of useless drivel. Put on your fire suit, and prepare for the worst.

I've been using Mobil 1 synthetic in my 88 IROC for years. My owner's manual specifies 5W-30, but the note on the oil fill cap calls for 10W-30. Go figure! Either will work. In cold winters, I go with 5W-30. In summer I use 10W-30. I've also used M1 T&SUV oil, which is 5W-40. You can't go wrong with a quality synthetic.

That's about the norm up here, but I think you and I have different definitions of a cold winter.
