Should I put in a high volume oil pump in used motor ???

Just picked up an 89 305 LO3 roller engine. It has 140,000 on the clock. Motor seems solid but I don't know what the oil pressure was. I don't really want to pull any bearings to check, in case is disturbs something that was working.

Should I install a high volume oil pump as insurance ??? Or is the stock pump likely to give good oil pressure ??? Thanks.

No.

A high volume pump "insures" nothing, except that you'll wear out the distributor gear faster.

Look inside the motor; a peek inside the valve cover will do. Smell the oil. Etc. In other words, check out the general overall state of the motor. If it's not all sludged up, and the oil doesn't smell like an old burnt-up motor, then the bearings are probably OK; and the oil pressure will probably also be OK.

cut open the filter that came on it and look for metal inside. A stock pump will do you just fine.
