Flexplate & starter combo problem

With spring hear and the baseball season just around the corner I am hoping to start my car before the big league season starts. So I need help because if I were playing baseball this would be strike 3 and I'd be out!

Here is my situation.

Rebuilt 383 with a 168 tooth flexplate and Mac shortie headers. [list]
Original starter didn't work because the old motor had a different flexplate. Strike one.

Changed the tailshaft and it looks like it will bolt up but the selonoid hits the headers. Strike two.

Got a High torque mini starter from Southwest Specialities that's supposed to fit with either flexplate and it doesn't. Plenty of header clearance but the mounting block needs to be taller for it to engage the flexplate. The gear shaft hits the flexplate inside of the teeth. Strike three.
Before I try anything else I wanted to seek advise from the best. TGO members have all the answers and I figure I got at least 2 more at bats before I call it a game.

I also started the same thread in the Trans/Drivetrain forum looking for help.

I had the same problem with my 400sbc I just built. The mini starter should have 4 holes in the mounting block, you would use the first and third hole (starting on the side away from the block) for the 153 tooth flywheel and the second and fourth hole for the 168 tooth fly wheel. you will probably need to shim it as well. hope this helps

I realize it may be too late for you, but you could have bought this:

and used your old starter and a 153 tooth flexplate.
