Weird starting problem.
Alright fella's my restored 84z with its 305 bored 30 over runs really well,,, but when you go to start it , lets asay after a week or two in the garage it will turn over and spin but actually needs alittle more tap of the gas peddle, then when you try it again it will thump real hard a couple three times and fire right up. What gives with this issue, any good idea's? Its carbed, edelbrock 600 cfm electric choke, accel ignition, taylor wires small edelbrock cam, not much bigger than the factory cam, the engine is the origional 305 h.o. . It has the factory style starter and Im wanting to blame the starter for this problem, matter of fact I went out and bought a mini starter cause I've the shorty headers and the factory unit doesnt like working to well after you shut down and go restart. Im not sure if it would be timing, the car is starting, there is no rough running idles great goes like heck, timing is pretty much right on target, would vaccum advance be an issue or no. This is a minor problem but Im not seeing where the true issue is,,, Yet. Thanks.

It's a carbed engine so two good pumps before starting and then about 1/8 throttle while starting should start it every time. It needs fuel introduced into the carb by you unlike fuel injected engines.
As far as the starter goes, I have hedman long tubes right next to my stock starter and have never had heat soak problems with it. I had problems with the original starter but that was because the starter was actually bad. Try the light weight starter if you want but don't be surprised if it doesn't fit and the wires don't reach. I tried one and it didn't fit at all.
just my opinion.

Sounds like your float bowl is dry and you have to crank it long enough for the fuel pump to resupply it.
Some of the old quadrajets had casting plugs in the bottom of the float bowl. The fuel would leak out past the plugs into the intake. After sitting for a couple of days, the float bowl would be dry. If it only sat a few hours there would still be fuel in the float bowl and the eng would start right up. We used to smear a thin coat of JB-weld over the casting plugs during the rebuilding process to prevent the leakege.
I'm not very familiar with edelbrock carbs but maybe they suffer a similiar problem.
