problem with engine getting fuel

Was driving down the road and the engine stalled.
Sprayed starting fluid down the TPI. The engine turned over and started but only when the fluid was being sprayed. Engine is not reciving the gas. Does anyone know of this type of problem.

Sounds like a fuel pump problem to me, but you need to check fuel pressure to be sure. Otherwise it could be any number of things causing the injectors not to fire. The fuel filter is always a good place to start also.

Could it be the fuel pump relay switch?

The relay is cheap - just grab another one and try it. While there - check the wires going to the relay for power - one of the 5 wires will get 12 volts when key is on. The wire connector can go bad - mine did and I had to get another and wire it in.

To see if the pump is getting any power, when it's quiet outside, put ear on hump in rear hatch and have someone turn key to on and listen for the pump to prime.

Could also be oil pressure sending unit - if it goes bad and doesn't detect any oil pressure, the pump won't run.

Oh, and fuse lol.

I had a simiular problem not long ago. I would start with the Relay switch. This would be the cheapeset way to begin. If this does not fix the problem then check the fuel pressure on the TPI fuel rail. You should get between 50-60 psi there. If your fuel pressure is sluggish then replace the inline fuel filter as in the response from Joe below.

From here most people go to the fuel pump which is a long and drawn out task that can cost a lot since the fuel pump is inside the fuel tank. This requires you to drop the exhuast system and tank. Before you go to this expense I would check voltage on injectors and the pick-up coil and distributor system.

My problem was corrected on my Camaro after I replaced the MAF sensor, Pick-up coil and distributor..

Thanks,

Erick
