Dip stick too short = TROUBLE?

Ok guys,
Ever since I got an oil change, (was the first after the rebuild) the guy who did the oil change kept checking the level of the oil and kept adding more until the stick said it was full. I kind of though this was weird but I really didn't say anything. Now about 2 months later I was doing a fluid check and the did stick read low oil, so I went back to the place I got the oil change and he had to add 3 quarts. I started wondering WTF is going on here, when I first got my car home the plugs on the drivers bank had alot of carbon so I changed them, now they have oil and no carbon. I measured the dipstick and it is 18", I was checking an auto parts web site and I believe it quoted a dip stick around 19.5". I have a rebuilt 71 block, could the excessive oil in the engine cause the plugs to become saturated and I have alot of smoke coming out of the tail pipe most of the time. I am not loosing oil in the driveway, any thoughts?

I'm not sure, but probably. About how much oil in total did he put in?

I don't remember but it seems like it was too much, he even looked puzzled as he had to keep adding more. Now 3 quarts short after 2 months and burning alot of oil seems a bit excessive to me?

drain the oil and put 5 quarts back in it. Then look and see where it is on the stick. If oil is in the chambers but not on the ground then you're burning it. Rings are probably shot.

I did that , the oil wont even register on the dip stick. My point was IS MY DIP STICK TOO SHORT????????" 71 Block, who has the specs? Rings can't be shot ( well they can but only 6500 miles on a rebuild it's hard to imagine they would be?) I think my stick is too long as I originally posted and I need a better analysis.

is that a factory dipstick u may be able to contact the chevy dealership and give them the part # on it if its still readable. hell i think my block is a 70 or 71 maybe. it may be a little older. if i can rem. i look at it tom.

oh also yea if u have excessive oil it would be on the plugs and smokin real bad but it would have to be a lot of extra oil. if its got a lot in it itll be running down the valve seal into the chambers prob.

Well then your dipstick is too short then. If you already knew that then why did you post? Has it got a stock pan on it? If it's got a deeper pan then that would account fo the oil no showing on the stick.

And the rings absolutely can be shot with low miles. If it wasn't put together properly (which seems logical since the dummy put the wrong dipstick in it) or if it wasn't broken in properly (another strong possibility) then the rings could be shot after 6500 miles.

, I am new to anything biffer than a 4 banger or a rotary engine. I am assuming the dip stick is too short because of what I found when I did a search. The guy I bought the car from couldn't give me any information on the build, or the builder so I have no freakin clus what is in it I was looking up info so I could try and get a casting # to make sure it is infact a 71 block. How deep is a stock oil pan anyway? Thanks for your help and I hope the rings aren't shot.

I just pulled the dip stick, it looks stock and all it reads is
ADD FULL USE GM 6041-M QUALITY MS OIL M
Someone suggested that a different oil pan could have been used, is there any real way to determine the proper dip stick size? Thanks for your help guys.

Go buy a varying size of dipsticks. Work from small to long until you hit the bottom of the pan and go back one size. Whipe and return the others...only thing I can think of.
