Low milage L03??????

I picked up a rebuilt short block from another ThirdGen.org member, who says the engine had less the 300 miles on it yet there was a very slight ridge on cylinder wall, supposedly the engine was bored .040 over. Also the pistons had a fair amout of carbon on top, some areas, not completely covered.

How soon would any kind of ridge, however slight, show up on a rebuild?

Thanks,

Mark

Probably more like 130,000 miles. Or the motor has been completely abused AND THE OIL NEVER CHANGED. Alot of motors with proper maintenance can see well over 100,000 miles and still have no ridge.

Its nothing to catch a fingernail on, its just that I thought if it was board out, with low milage the wall would be totally smooth from piston TDC to top of cylinder. The cylinder walls still have cross hatching and theres no up and down wear pattern.

Well I guess I confused you by asking my original question. I really didnt know what you meant by a ridge. I NOW know that the term means the wear created by the up and down motion of the piston on the cylinder walls. Newbieness aside I believe the person meant the engine had 300 miles AFTER being bored. I'm guessing its a possibility that the machining did not remove all of the motors previous wear.

I guess were both kinda newbies. My question is if it was bored .040 there would be no ridge period? or is it possible there might be a ever-so-slight after several hundred miles?
