Car doesn't Idle.

Well, I let my brother take a trip to kohls, about 10 mins from my house. He calls a little while ago and says the car will not start. So I get there, and get the whole story. He was driving along, and the vehicle cut out. I turn the key, she cranks over and then dies. I start it again, only with my foot on the pedal, thinking there was a possible clog in the injection system. It bogs down for a second, and with my foot on the gas, I manage to keep it running. As soon as I take my foot off, she dies. My first guess is the fuel pump has died. I've been hearing a buzz noise and had other signs (rough cold starts, ect) the pump was going for the last 4 months or so. It has had a semi-recent fuel filter change, and I'm not terribly sure what else it can be. My brother thinks it is the O2 sensor, but I seriously doubt the car would cut off while driving as a result. Nor would I think that it was a spark problem, as it turns over and idles (with gas applied). The weather is a bit muggy, misty, and it has rained today, but I also doubt that is an issue.

I've already done a search, and people have suggested to jump the pump using a 12v to terminal "G" on the ALDL connector. The only wire I believe he has there is my jumperwire to pull codes, which is only approx. 6 inches long. Does anyone happen to know what terminal "G" is in relation to the 12 or so different pins on the plug, and how much wire would be required to jump from the fuse box to the connector? Assuming it is a fuel issue, and that it would bypass any bad relays.

I apologize for the long post, it's just that I'm rather upset with the outcome of the situation. He's probably still in the parking lot as I type, scratching his head, so any immediate insight you kind folks could give would be invaluable to getting my precious home for the evening.

Thanks.

Edit: It is a TBI system

You are correct. The car doesn't even listen to the O2 sensor until it's been running for about 5 minutes.

That ought to help. What you need to do is get +12V over to the "fuel pump" terminal.

I'm not certain that'll bypass anything I always figured it would just tell the ECM to turn on the pump using the normal method, someone with more experience might want to speak up here.

Measure how far it is from the ALDL connector to your fuse box.... use that much wire....

After a little searching, I found that using the fuel pump from a 1989 dodge conquest will provide a sufficient amount of gasflow to get home. I'm sure camaronewbie might be able to answer this question, but for emergency's sake (I need to get this car back home asap), would the fuel pump from a mitsubiti starion work also? According to google they are sister cars, but I'm not terribly sure.

To be honest, if it is a failed fuel pump, I'd like to purchase an external one long enough to get the car home and then return/exchange it for the proper one.
Is there a cheaper approach to this possible problem (~$90 for the mitsu pump)? I'm not familiar with fuel pumps in the least bit, but am confident I could replace it once I get the car home. Also, does anyone think one of the big auto part stores would have a problem with this? I've been able to return most any other parts in the past and haven't had one issue.

Again, sorry for the long post. Just want to cover all possible avenues to avoid making redundant trips back home.

Also, this is where you local folks chime in with "I've got an extra pump and will be available Saturday"

Thanks

Also, continuing the "just in case" scenerio, what would be considered the best place to splice the external pump power to? I know I cant just hook it to the battery, or could I?

Last thing I want to do is cause more damage than I am fixing, thus the many questions. I can't afford a tow home, nor can I drop the tank in the middle of the lot:P.

Thanks again.

Fuel pump couldn't be jumped. Got it towed home. Covering it with a tarp, replace the pump and the transmission in the near future.

By then, if there aren't any economically viable kits to convert the injection to E85, then it's going in the classifieds.

Thanks all.
