bag of marbles sound

hey guys my motor is now at 400miles and to put it simple. while cranking it sounds like a bag of marbles in the oil pan is the best way i could put it. and when its running its still their. Not sure what to check first. was thinking oil pump but can it really do that? what the heck could make a sound like this. my last engine blew up due to a broken rod and even then i know what that sounds like my new engine does not make that sound.

some background info.

-stumble with tach freaking out., ditched my ignition box and got a new coil, semeed to fix the issue, then shortly after, stumble came back without tach issue, upon engine start one day i heard that sound only while cranking, once it fired it ran ok, of coarse one cylinder wasnt that great due to bad injector.

throw in some 24# injectors i had borrowed, and now while cranking and when it fired up the sound is always there. i did not let it run more then 5 seconds. im scared.

Marbles

Is the sound in rythm with the motor or is it independent? Also since you have a 383 did the machine shop (or you) take out the proper amount of material from where the crank comes in contact with the block? Sounds like a serious problem, sorry to hear it, but good luck.

it sounds independant. i bought the block clearanced from an original stroker, i tore it down, rebuilt it and the shop did additional clearancing for my parts. like i said this did not start happening until abou tthe 400mile mark where it just came in , nothing gradual.

Is it possibly coming from the transmission? Just tossing around some ideas.

there are alot of moving parts in a transmission, you could unbolt the flywheel from the torque converter and see if the sound is still there.

check the flywheel bolts make sure there tight to the crank, and check the torque converter bolts my buddys monty had the same problem it sounded like marbles pattering at the back of the pan plus it happened about 500 miles after he built the motor. The torque converter bolts were not loose to the touch but he was able to get 1 turn of the wrench on all 3 and once he tighted them the noise stoppped. His also did this all the time at, idel with the car in park, and driving around not sure if it did it when he was cranking it but wasnt listning though. Hope this helps.

thanks that definetely is something i will check into . cuz i really doubt its the engine. it was built well and i took no shortcuts. could make sense too sense at first it only did it while cranking and now does it all the time.
however i did locktite all of it and snugged them real well. it would be a pain to check the flexplate to the crank but the torque converter i can do!

i dont think so because i unplugged my ignition module so i had -0- spark and it still did it while cranking.

Thats what I would do first we never actuall checked his crank bolts but when the problem occured we were told by a bunch of people who listened to check the crank and converter bolts we figured check the easy one first, the converter, tightened them and we were good to go.

That motor has been in the making for 2 years trying to get the funds and being meticulous on researching the parts I wanted and finally 3 weeks ago I started ording everyting for the 632 Ill keep you guys updated on everything as it get together. Heres a pic of the 502 which is the first big block that was supposed to go in the car, long story but in the end wanted MORE cubes + the Blower + Nitrous + An Alcohol/Water Injection Mix. I wanted to do somthing thats never been done before, so I sold the 502 motor only to a buddy a finaly ordered the parts for the replacement. Oh the belt was to short at the time the pic was taken I just wanted to get an idea of what it would look like.
