yanking out motor
Im about to paint my car and im pulling out the engine so i can paint the engine bay because its a complete color change. i was just wondering how hard is it to pull a carbed automatic 350 out of a 89 Rs? i have a haynes manuel and it doesnt sound to hard but i have never done it before. also i know i have a manual but what all do i need to pull from the engine. i already pulled the hood and driveshaft off earlier today. Is this a all day chore or more like a week long chore? i took auto-tech I and II in high school where we pulled engines out of FWD cars like hondas but i havent done anything like this before but i think/hope i can do this.

Prior to taking the engine out, make sure to take plenty of pictures of all the wires, sensors, plugs, etc. This will help when you put everything back on the engine. Are you planning to remove the engine and tranny together? If not, you will need long extension to reach the upper part of the engine/tranny bolt. Although I have seen people install engine with the readiator in place, I would have it removed. Since you have some background in removing engines, even if it's fwd, you should be able to do it in less than 2-4 hours and that is doing the work yourself.

Pulled my junk 350 last night (water in #6 hole).
Took about 2hrs to do taking my sweet a$$ time (including the beer breaks). The hardest part was trying to get them dang bolts out of the headers...
Pretty simple job.

Not long at all helps too have a buddy's extra hands around. Listen to above make sure you label wires and sensors and make sure you disconnect all grounds and pull it out slow to ensure you got everything.
When you get done you will be like dam, thats it.

I will be doing this soon too to swap it into a hopefully nicer body... good luck.

I took my engine out last week for the first time. It took me a total of 6 hours + 2 six packs from a running car to having the engine hanging on an engine stand.
A few tips.
1) Jack the car up and set the frame rails of the body on jack stands. don't rest the jack stands on the rear axle.
2) My car has a manual transmission so I pulled it from the bell housing before pulling the engine. Rest the back oil pan on something first.
3) Remove the window wiper motor.
4) make sure your engine hoist is setup to pull the motor out high enough but can still do it without hitting the roof of your garage.
5) I pulled my engine with the bellhousing and engine accessories all attached. i.e. Power steering pump, Air Compressor, etc...
6) pull the engine up off the motor mounts a few inches and pull it forward to make accessing the rear of the engine block easier so you can remove the wireharness.

Oh I forgot, remove the hood at the fenders and not at the bracket/hood spot.

Where exactly do you attach the chain anyway ?
I've seen some people attach it all to the intake manifold ? With an adaptor plate ?

I normally just pull 2 intake bolts out and bolt the chain up with 2 longer grade 8 bolts with some thick washers.. I've used one of those plates that bolts on in place of your carb before too, I've heard its not a good idea on an aluminum manifold because it can elongate threads in the holes or strip em out thus dropping the engine which makes sense but I had no problem with it.. there's many other options though, I'm sure others will chime in..

hmmm ok, because after reading a bunch of posts, I changed my mind and decided to remove the engine with the tranny, original plan was just the engine but it seems so much easier to pull both, my question is just where to attach the chain
