starting problem - Very odd... HELP.

I have a 1987 z28 tpi 305 100% stock. When I 1st try to start it, it turns over really quick but won't start, I continue to turn it over until the battery is too dead to turn the starter. When I hook jumper cables to the battery it starts on the 1st bump of the ignition. The odd part to me is, it looks like it would start without the jumper cables sence it turns over so quickly. I will probrobly get a new battery for it this weekend but is there anything else it could be??

Try disconnecting the batt. terminals and cleaning them.

Sounds like the ECM's not gitt'in the message but the starter is. Check battery post connector's also. Their's more than just 2 wires and the little ones corrode first.

Might want to replace alternator/battery. If your accessories turn on, it's probably not a terminal problem. If you try to start the car until the battery dies, the battery doesn't have enough juice to start the engine. If you jumpstart the car and it starts up, then it's definitely the alternator gone bad, as the battery will keep the car going as long as it can (not very long at all). Bring it to an autozone or something, they'll tell you if it's shot.

90% sure it's the alternator. But when you replace an alternator you should replace the battery too.
