Camshaft Replacement?? engine in or out??

Hi All,

Just found out I've got 2 exhaust lobes wiped on my cam..(a face thats crying would be great here). I am seeking advise from anyone who can offer it. Has anyone swapped a cam with the motor in the car, or is it a must to come out on our cars? I really really am not looking to have to pull the motor again. Any help or ideas would be great...Thanks.

If you've got wiped lobes it should come out so you can inspect for any other damage.

I agree, if you just change the cam/lifters, you're betting on the fact that the fil;ter has all the cam material in it.

If it's just a low budget motor you're playing with, fine, but if you have any real dollars inside, best to pull it out and see what it looks like.

It can be done in the car.

Its easier out of the car obvioulsy.

If u have damage like u said, I would recommend pulling it so you can inspect everything.

later

I am really confused now????????? Theres no metal anywhere and we pulled the valve cover and the valves are moving exactly as they should. The problem I am having is number 3 and 5 header tubes are not heating up, you can grab them by hand after its been running for 20 minutes. I have spark so we thought maybe fuel..its a TPI, so I pulled the injectors blew everything out with air and swapped the injectors. They are now heating up to where you can't grab them, so I am lost. I am going to drive it around the block Saturday and then hit it with a temp reader and see if the temp is the same on all pipes, cross my fingers, if not I am right back where I started.

As far as the swap one of my customers (an automotive shop) said he'd stab one in for $400.00, so I'd let him fuss with it this go round rather than me. Any input or ideas would be appreciated.

Might want to readjust the valves?
