Checking ignition timing with an MSD 6AL

I have the MSD 6AL box and I know you are not supposed to check the timing with a light that has an advance **** on it because of the multiple sparks. For some reason I seem to remember that this doesn't occur at idle though. So can I check the base timing with this kind of timing light? Or do I need to get a tape for the balancer and use a non-advance light, even to check the base idle. Thanks.

I've never had a problem doing it the "standard" way with an MSD box. IIRC, multiple sparts stop around 3,000 RPM.
