What is this thing?

What is this thing ? What does it do? And how hard is it to change myself? How much $ approx parts and labor if I have it done? Previous owner said that it has a broken pin and if I remember correctly it is a heat risor. Any tips or advise will help!

it looks like it has a vacuum line on it, but i've never seen that piece on a thirdgen mounted on the manifold like that before. does it have any numbers stamped onto it ?

oh yea, the heat riser. I left mine off, not exactly crucial to the running of the car.

if this is the heat riser that runs a tube from the manifold to the air cleaner, it's for faster warmups in the winter by drawing heated air into the air cleaner off the manifolds. Not really needed.

it blocks the flow of exauast on the pass. side exauast when the engine is cold and forces the gasses into the crossover in the intake manifold and into the drivers side head and out the the driver side exauast manifold, it's there to warm up the intake and engine quicker...it's a emmision control device that really hurts preformance, and uasally get's stuck in one pos. or another, it take about 10 min to change IF the exauast manifold to Y-pipe bolts come off W/O breaking....otherwise good luck, I honestly would get a set of hedders and get rid of it

C'mon guys. It's on the passenger side (see the dipstick) and controls the EFE (Early Fuel Evaporation) valve between the pass side exhaust manifold and the connection to the Y pipe. When closed it forces exhaust gas from the pass manifold through the crossover passages in the intake manifold to the driver side exhaust manifold. Helps warm the manifold and promote Early Fuel Evaporation during cold weather starts. Unless you live where it gets really cold, you can probably do without it. Just make sure it's in the default open position or remove it (it is a restriction in the exhaust).

Thanks all, I'll probably just change it. Indiana can get cold. Yes it's on passenger side.

make sure U use lots and lots of penertrating oil on those bolts....all it's held in by is the Y-manifold bolts and a vacume line, but those bolts are most likly really rusted in place

On my 85 vacuum is applied when cold and the plunger is retracted , so if the shaft that sticks out of the vacuum motor is extended it is open.

Ok the plunger is retracted and in the open position. It is missing a clip or cotter pin or something holding the 2 linkage together. One goes through the other and clips somehow. Thanx all ! Anyone got any pics of one?

My clip was missing too. You might want to take trip to the junk yard , then you can get what you need and see how it goes together. Or you could go the dealer and look at his microfiche.
