Help with valve stem seals
Alright I'm a total newbie when it comes to stuff inside the engine. The engine is a 305 and I need to replace the valve stem seals. I've done a bit of searching but I need a better guide and possibly some pictures of how to do it and what tools I need. I also don't know which seals to buy as there seem to be so many different types. Help would be GREATLY appreciated.

buy the positive seals for both intake and exhaust valve stems and get the o rings for both too. youll need a 3/8 socket i believe, something to hold the valves up so they dont fall into the cylinder and you say bye bye, theres a special tool i dont know the name but its got a slot and hole on one end and a long bar on the other its used to compress the spring to get out the keepers.

The tool your refering to is called a valve spring compressor tool..I am curious where do you stick the 3/8 socket?..I usually use about 100lbs of compressed air to inject into the cylinder being worked on.It usually does a good job of holding valves closed, while removing keepers etc.

Get an air compressor that builds at least 100 psi or more.An adapter that will screw into the spark plug hole.Remove the valve covers and make sure that the cylinder your working on that both rocker arms are not pushing down on the springs. Both valve will be closed..apply air pressure to the cylinder ,which holds both valves closed and use the valve compressor tool to push down on top of the retainer(round disk on top of spring)..you will need to unscrew the rocker arm first.Once you have the spring compressed you will notice around the valve stem two half pieces of metal. Those are the keepers they lock the valve stem to the retainer.Once those are out slowly release the tool and remove the spring and there you will put either pc seals or o-rings around the valve stem.Theres a groove where the o-rings sit in and some of the o-rings might be gone or parts of them still hanging on.If I am correct sometimes installing pc seals might need some machine work, but you can replace o-rings either way.Once you got that done ,get a manual and read how to adjust valves.
