305 problems

Ok I've got a 91 rs with a very very weak 305 that has about 125k miles on it. There's a ticking from what seems to be the front right side of the engine and I have an oil leak on the intake manifold gasket and the oil pan gasket. Maybe more but that's all I've seen. Can the leaks cause a loss of power? And what's with the ticking? I've been told it's the valves. How can it be fixed?

Could be exhaust leak.Had a 1987 T/A and thought it was a bad engine or valve or something.Exhaust leak was all

A oil leak can cause a loss of power if you run low on oil and starve the engine.Yes,it could be an exhaust leak or a valve. If you can get ahold of a stethoscope with a long needle type end you can find a exhaust leak real easy and/or a valve ticking. The valves ticking could be your cause of loss of power too.Its possible they are just out of adjustment and you will need to remove the valve cover to access them.A good manual will tell you how to tackle this job.

It's the valves. I was told before but I was just wondering what else it could be. I wish it was an exhaust leak though. Also my car has no power. Below 30 mph the car with get up and go pretty good, but after that, it's so weak. It really feels like the engines is pretty much shot but it idles fine and in the past 6-7 months I've owned it, it has been completely dependable...as far as the engine goes. So does anybody have any idea on the lack of power...I know it's not just because it's a tbi 305...I raced an 86 with no mods but a k&n and he got me by about 3 lengths.

Btw the only mods I have are bosch 2 plugs, bosch wires, k&n, gutted cat, and edelbrock catback

Are you sure it only has 125k on it and not 225k or more.I got well more than that on my 1987 t/a and it still ran great. You could try haveing the valves adjusted.I did that to my iroc and it sounded like a new car,but it could be a sign of internal wear problems or damage if it is your valves

sometimes when the smog pump is going bad it sounds like a ticking valve or an exhaust leak. mine is doing it right now I could have sworn it was a bad valve.

I'm sure it's the valves. The car only has 125k but when I got it the fan wasn't working and I found old papers in the car that shop had gave the previous owner about how the car was overheating. So I guess the other guy pretty much killed it when he let it run hot for so long. There's about 10 different receipts with notes on them saying "car continues to run hot". The shop couldn't figure out how to get the fan on....all they needed to do was turn the a/c or heater on...that's what I do and the fan stays on.

Well, it's not completely blown yet but it's knocking. Raced a neon and a modded civic..on the way home the knocking started. It's not really much of a problem tho because I've had the parts for a new 350 for a while. The setup is in the link below.
