Make sure you unplug your electronic advance from your distributor when timing, and to plug it back in when you are done. It's a brown wire leading to a red plastic connection bung to the distributor.
You can also check your IAC motor to make sure it is operating properly. Check the tech articles, theres an article for testing and cleaning it out.
