Notching the cylinder

I know a guy with a 496 who notched the tops of his cylinders (down to just above the top ring limit at TDC), so he could unshroud his big valves. He says it's quite a common practice among the big block guys.

I was wondering how grinding the top of the cylinders to unshroud the valves would affect durability. Does it cause "hot spots" inside the combustion chamber (although his notches are very smooth)? Is engine life shortened?

On what kind of motor? SBC might not like that too much... they don't have the thick wall castings that the BBC does.
