400hp from an NA 305...

How plausible do some of you expert engine guys thinks this is (400 hp from a naturaly aspirated 305)?

I was talking with a friend the other day about hp per cubid inch numbers, and we both started thinking that 400hp from an NA 305 might be possible. 305's are everywhere (can be had for free most of the time) and 400hp is just about right for respectable performance on the street and at the strip.

Any opinions? Thoughts on how it might be done?

We were thinking it would have to be stroked for starters. What after that? How much compression would it take; 11:1, 12:1? How much valve lift?

Has anybody 'built' a 305 with engine simulation software? If so, what kind of number id you come up with?

Using DD2003, I got 503hp peaking at 7000rpm and 428ft/lbs peaking at 5250rpm.

327 Stroker
AFR 195 heads
11:1 CR
1000cfm carb
Single Plane High Flow Intake
Large Tube Headers and Mufflers
Cam with .501/.501 lift and 240/244 duration at .050

How accurate is this? Beats me, but I'm sure it's possible somehow.

Yes it can be done.

No it would not be particularly difficult.

Yes it has already been done, for a magazine article; the motor blew up on the dyno.

No it would not be smart. For the same money and effort it would take to build that, you could build a 450 HP 350.

Cubic inches are like a "money amplifier". Inches x money = power. You want a given level of power, you have a given number of inches, prepare to spend accordingly. Or, you have a given amount of money and want a given amount of power, inches are your friend (and small motors are your enemy).

Bottom line is, you will spend ALOT more money building a 400 HP 334 than a 400 HP 350; and it will STILL be slower, because it will have less average torque "under the curve", because it will have less inches. In other words, you spend more, but get beat by somebody that spent less.

So beyond the mere intellectual exercise to prove that it can be done, it is of no practical value in the real world.

Actually, the formula only works when the money factor is constant.
