Ingredients for a 400hp 355?

Would a 750 cfm carb be enough to support 400hp? What size intake runner would i be looking at? Would a Set of 64cc Dart Iron Eagle heads (9.6:1 CR), RPM Performer Intake, Roller Rockers, a Comp Xtreme Energy cam, and Slp headers do the trick?

Yes that would be a realistic recipe...

Use a Comp XE274 cam if you're going flat tappet, and 1.6 rockers.

Darts would be a good head for that setup, almost too much for any TPI unless heavily modified to take advantage of them (the 200cc and up I'm talking about), but good for a carb. The 200cc Darts should do the trick, I know several guys making good power with them and carb setups. The carb is fine as well.

you'd be fine with heads smaller than 200cc, bc if your going to keep your tpi, then you dont want a engine that wants , or needs to rev to make power(reving high i mean). there are plenty of 180 - 190 cc headed engines around that make more than 400hp

Icenine, I have on the stand a 383 with Dart Iron Eagle 200/72cc heads and Comp Cams XE274H-10. This is the cam recommended by CC. I am going with the Harland and Sharp 1.5 full roller rockers.

Let me give you some info that came with my Heads and Cam. I offer this FYI and also a word of caution re the 1.6 rocker. It is not my intention to make any recommendations either for or against the 1.6 rockers, I’ll leave that to the more experienced engine builders (RB note that I am not knocking your recommendation).

Head Info supplied with the Heads (200/72cc):

Cam Type O.D./Type Install Press/Ht. Max Lift

Hydraulic 1.250” Single 110# at 1.700” .520”
Solid 1.437” Dual 135# at 1.800” .620”
Roller 1.550” Dual 195# at 1.900” .700”

Info from Cam card:

P/N 12-246-3
Grind No. XE274H-10

Rocker Intake Exhaust
Lobe Lift .325 .327
Gross Lift .48 .490 as per cam card

My Calculations 1.5 .4875 .4905
My Calculations 1.52 .4940 .4970
My Calculations 1.6 .5200 .5232

Spring Recommendation: Comp Cams #981-16 (105# at 1.700”)

Note that Dart’s Max. Lift for a Flat tappet Hydraulic cam is .520” and note also that going to a 1.6 Rocker Ratio will give theoretically .523” Lift on the Exhaust side.

Just a word of caution.

Bruce

PS: Wow! hope you can follow that. Not what it looks like on my 'WORD' file.

Just watch for coil bind. Tell Comp Cams all your engine information and what you want it to do and they will recommend a cam and valve springs. Matching the valve springs to the cam is a critical part of any engine building process.

Thanks for the information. I just have three questions.

Would Comp Cams set me up with a hydraulic cam, or a solid cam?

Do any of the Dart Iron eagle heads come assembled with the right spring strength for an XE274 Cam?

Finally, should I go with straight or angled spark plugs?
Thanks

I9,

Where do you want to make 400+ HP? You can put 400+ at the crank with a 650 SCFM carb and relatively mild valve train on 355 cubes.

The example I have uses a Crane hydraulic (non-roller) cam with less than 0.480" net lifts, and stock head castings with port work and valves. It is running close to 11.2:1, but can be nursed to run down the road on pump gas.

Your goal is not unrealistic at all, and should be easily achievable.
