Bad Sound

Ok. V6 3.1L 1990 Firebird, when I'm at full throttle, a popping sound comes from what feels like my shifter. It's a scary, loud pop that only happens at full throttle. What can I check?

Might be a possible exhaust leak at the pipe that goes by that area. I know when I get to WOT and let off, I hear a series of popping noises..check the link in my sig, you can hear some of it when I get off the throttle.

If that is the case, then it's harmelss, other than losing exhaust velocity, but you can get some kind of wrap from an auto-store and seal it up for the time being until you can weld it up.

Well, I've been fiddling with the distributor, and now the sound is like a rattling/popping sound when I press the throttle. Could it be the timing? I set it to 10* BTDC.

Update

So I've kinda isolated the sound, and it only happens when the engine first shifts gears. After it's shifted, the sound goes away. And it feels like its right in the shifter **** center console area, so i'm gonna rip that out today and see what's goin on. Anyone ever have something like this happen? What did it turn out to be?
