in my 85 the ho meant better heads, cam, and higher comp ratio, and i believe different jetting in the carb

i think the earlier ones were about the same differences

The L69 had the same heads as the LG4 in most cases with the same size valves. A corvette cam was used instead of the little tiny normal 305 cam. The compression ratio was increased by going from the LG4s dished pistons to the L69s flattop w/4 valve reliefs. The L69 got a hotter prom chip that gave it more timing advance. The secondary metering rods are different on the L69 (DRs on a K hanger, typically). The exhaust system from the head ports back was different on the HO models as well.

There is a thread on the FAQ forum about this very topic.

For the record, the heads were the same between an LG4 and the HO L69. Compression was lower in the LG4 until 1985 because of dished pistons.

Go look on the FAQ forum for the rest of the details.
