Engine Removal
Engine Removal
I really want to paint the inside of the engine bay black so I figured I would remove the engine in order to do a better job. If I have all the right equipment should it be an easy job or is it a major pain to do this. My friend's dad removed his so I figure he could help me out. Any input? By the way the engine is a 305 tbi if that helps any. Does anyone know what type of paint the older camaros used for their engine bays?

Yeah but the look I am going for is the older muscle car engine bays. I own two trans ams (pics below) and they both have like a semi gloss engine bay paint. I just wanted to have the most accurate paint as possible if anybody knows. My camaro is currently maroon and I eventually want to paint the exterior black but I figured I would do the engine bay first.

from experience.... i can tell u.. if u got the time and money do it..
however hope u take alot of before pictures, tgake alot of notes, opn how and what plugs into what etc... and when i did it with an fbody, i pulled the engine with the tranny... make sure to save every little screw and bolt u take out, and remember where the stuff goes.. took me less than 2 hours to pull the engine, and 4 days to reassemble, with no experience... i painted the engine compartment yellow... i did it with 0.99 cent spray paint, and it came out really nice..
my problem was, i was dumping money into the car soo much i spent almost 1500 dollars on random **** i regret...
next thing u know, i blew the engine 3 weeks later..
and i could pay anyone to take away a yellow camaro z28 convertable, with a blown engine.. no one wanted it... i never understood.... i ended up selling it for 800 dollars, i say it would have been worth 8,000 running...
but if u want to wrap the engine up with plastic, and spray anything u can without overspraying stuff u should be in good hands....
depends how serious you are and what time you have available and money i guess...
pulling and re-assembling was a BIT--CH if ur an expert then go for it, but it was a project for me when i was 19.....

upon further thought. i suggest you focus on lets say... 2 or 3 square feet at a time, clean it good with degreaser, tape off important item,s... clean it good and maybe scruff it up with some 200 grit sand paper.. and paint high temp shiney black paint on the particular section one day...
do that every couple of days then it iwll grow on you... its not that big of a project.... might work out easier and cheaper in the long run...
i say that because now i rent an apartment, and aparently me changing my battery in my car with my hood open, is against policy and they can evict me.. friggin idiots.... but my engine compartment is gonna be painted BLUE in the next m,onth, and thats how i plan on doing it... cleaning prepping one small area or section at a time... and then painting it... until its all blue...

look at eastwood.com. They'd have the "correct" underhood paint color. Restoration to factory finish is their specialty. You can get it brush on or spray on IIRC.
