91 Camaro RS surges then stalls
Hi, I am trying to fix my Mom's 91 RS with a 305. It's all stock with only 80k miles. It has always run kinda hot (i guess that is normal) but a week ago it was boiling over into the overflow bottle. Then rather then tell me, they drove it again and it overheated and died suddenly.
I figured the engine seized and was toast. That is not the case. She said there was no loss of power, it just stalled suddenly on the freeway.
I took a look at it last night. It turned over at normal speed with the starter, no colant in the oil, pulled all the plugs and they are all light brown not oily, the overflow bottle was only slightly low and the radiator was full. But it would not start. I checked the codes and got a 14 and 15 for high and low coolant temp. The temp sensor had recently been changed though.
So I pulled the distributor cap (had fouled up old contacts) and changed it and the rotor. Tested the ignitor it was good. Changed the (origional) plug wires with new, and changed the plugs because they looked worn, but not too bad. Then did start after that but surged to about 1k rpm and then almost died, then surged and then died. It will cycle like that for a minute or so and stall. If you give it throttle it will want to stall. There is no smoke from the exhaust, it sounds like all 8 cyl are firing, has strong spark, and I can see fuel spraying from the TBI. It does smell rich when it starts.
I am stumped, after I reset the codes none came back up after running it again, yet it surges and stalls. What could cause this?

I bought a tbi fuel pressure tester last night.
I changed the fuel filter and the fuel pressure is still only about 4 psi. I think it should be 9-12psi. I think that is the problem right there.
How hard is it to change the fuel pump?

kinda difficult. you might need to cut the exaust off and then lower your rear end. then after that you have to lower your tank and depending on how heavy it is, it might be difficult. other than that changing one is cake.

I've never heard of having to cut the exhaust. Drop it, yes, but never having to cut it.
