engine timing advice

engine timing advice

hello, i was wondering, i put 91 octane in my engine, and i have been told to change the engine timing to get better power, i was wondering is someone could explain how to do this in detail for me, i have red the books, but any advice woudl help. i am new at this mechanic stuff and i dont want to blow anything up

Above the heater box, under the hood, sticking out of the wiring loom is a single wire weatherpack connector. The wire running through it is tan with a black stripe. When you unplug it all computer-suppplied timing will be taken away. What is left is the "base" timing. On a stock TPI motor the base timing is supposed to be 6* BTDC, factory spec. Most motors can easily take about 4* more (10* BTDC) if you use decent fuel.

Unplug the timing wire, set base timing, plug the wire back in. Done.
