My friend had a 331 in his 92 lx coupe with AFR heads, GT-40 intake, Lunati cam, Throttle body, cold air, 1 3/4 long tubes, MAC Pro Chamber H-pipe, Flomasters, Tremac trans, 3.55 gears, and boots, and went 11.80's on motor.

10.20's!! And you're worried about some junk GT500? That turd is lucky to break the 11's. Sheet the new Z06 runs high 11's and it's packing 500hp

thats ford for you. a dirty four letter word that means lack of quality, pure crap. just look at their current line- nothing they have interests me, they only two cars they have that even look good are the mustang and gt. both are powered by engines i have no faith in. my mothers tuarus is a terrible car. its rusted beyond belief, has constantly needed attention. transmission, rack and pinion, power steering, stainless steel exhuast with steel mufflers. i will never buy any ford and i think they give american cars a bad name. a chevy with 100K miles is just broke in and a ford with 100K is getting ready for the scrap heap. even though this post is completely non-third gen related i just wanted to give my 2cents. 327's are great but never offered in the third gen.

They aren't all THAT bad. Like any other vehicle, they have their problems. Nothing is perfect. However, the kinds of problems the 331 Tritons are having just scare me. They seem to have some inherent engineering flaws that just can't be overcome easily.
Is it any wonder that Ford teams in NASCAR are still using the 351W-based blocks instead of the Romeo/Modulars? Does that tell you anything about durability under extreme duress?

i really dont like the modular engine too much either, i think ford made a mistake when they got rid of the 302 and the 351. i think the 5.0 ford was a much better engine then the modulars are. and that 1 thing i dont like about the new mustang. i dont like the 4.6L, i think the 302 or the chevy 305 are both better engines. my 305 may not have the same power output as a 4.6 but i think they last longer, and i can still do quite a bit to my 305 to build power.

with what your 327 runs, i doubt you would have any problems taking it, if the ford has been run hard for very long it may even break when you run it.
the 4.6 & 5.4 with proper care & driven with a light foot can clock in a lot of miles. were i work at we have a good number customers with ford vans & trucks with over 500,000 on the original engines. it seems like around the 600,000 mile mark if you haven't put a motor in yet, you should do it because its going to break down at any time. these are motors that never see anything near WOT, quarter to half throttle at most, you start leaning on them much & they don't last long.
we also have some people with very high mileage chevys, the highest mileage one i can think of had close to 700,000 miles when we did heads on it for a bad startup/coast down smoke problem. when she drove it to the dealer to pick up her new van, it had around 850,000 miles on the untouched short block.
even though fords can go for a lot of miles doesn't mean i would think about buying one, but they do keep our doors open, a ford is a break down looking for a place to happen, normally it picks the worst possible time & place to it.

My 03 Marauder with the 4.6 DOHC I feel is quicker than my 91 5.7 that has 61k miles on it. The Marauder has 22k and will take some time to find out the durability.

I could say the same about the chevies I have owned and some of the chevy products I have seen around me or even GM for that matter.
so far imports are the only thing I have had any real good luck with.
so whats your point? we all have some good ones and some bad ones

just like the one I see near my work that drives a newer ferrari 360 modena old fogy styl guy that just put puts the thing
As I hinted before, they aren't all that bad. There are probably better and worse designs, but it's amazing just how many cars and trucks can go a long, long time with just a little maintenance and care. Those people whoe drive around with the CHECK ENGINE light staring them in the face, "religiously" change the oil every 25,000 miles or three years whether it needs it or not, believe that "alignment" is a commie conspiracy and hoax, and ignore all the little noises and nuisance problems that arise are probably the very same people who just happen to be "unlucky" enough to get "piece of junk cars" no matter what they buy. Those of us who pay a little attention, address the little problem before they get larger, and keep the scheduled maintenance current are far more likely to get those 850,000 mile experiences. And that's why we're here.
As for the original topic, I'm sure a 327 can beat up on a 331 Ford. In the very next pass, the Ford could probably beat up on the 327. There are far roo many variables to even predict. The vehicles carrying the engines, the drivers, the modifications, gear ratios, weather, tires, state of tune, the techniques, and the list goes on.
