A couple weeks ago I was trying to set my electronic timing tables after setting the base timing. I took it out for a couple runs in which I noticed knock. (Sounds like a bunch of loud rattling coming from under the hood, right?) Lately I've noticed a slight tink tink tink coming from my motor, seemingly the top end. I only notice it under 1000 RPMS, however engine noise may drown it out above that RPM. It fades in and out as the motor runs, I do NOT always hear it. It varies with engine speed. If I am stopped at a light next to a sidewalk or wall I can hear it bouncing off the wall and back into my window, however I usually cannot hear it if there is nothing for the sound to bounce off.

What do you think? I'm about to change my oil tonight. Is there any way I can inspect valvetrain at home by pulling a valve cover or something?

I should add that I am not 100% sure if this started after I messed with the timing. It may have always done it and I just not noticed. But it could have just started too.

 

Get yourself an automotive stethescope and nail down where the noise is coming from. Right now your guessing and so would we.

My 92 is knocking and I've narrowed it to EGR selonoid failure by process of elimination as outline in my repair manual.

What's the mileage? If it's getting up there, it could be something as inoccuous as carbon buildup in the cylinders raising head temps and starting to cause detonation.

 

next time your hear it, get a long screw driver, put the handle end to your ear and poke around and find the noise. You could also use a long hose.
Did the tink exsist before you timed the motor?
