120mph + Whats happening?
I was taunted on the interstate yesterday and figured ok, I'll give ya a run to at least 110 till the speed limiter kicks in. I stomped it to the floor and it downshifts to 3rd and takes off. At 100 it locks up (shift light is on) and proceeds to go right past 120 at 4K rpm. At this point I'm out of #'s on the speedo. It continued another 10 past 120 and at this point I had to back it down because I was catching up to other cars on the road and besides, The other guy was just a spot in the rear view anyway!
Thinking it was just a fluke, I mashed it on the way home last night and it went right up to 120mph again.
So, whats happening? Not that I'm complaining (no custom chip required). At 130mph the car is glued to the road like a slot car and takes a bump in the road better than it does at 70. (yes, I do have speed rated tires). At this point, my need for speed has been satisfied! and I'm done with the mod's which are just the basics, cat back, open element, and several tweeks. I think the other guy in the moosestang is probably shopping at the speed store as we speak!!

sounds like your govenor is busted and no doing its job. Thats all. Or someone put in a chip before you had that car. It happened with my 91 before I totally be built it. I had a 145 speedo and I made it to about 135 before I was catching up to traffic. It was not a chip you could even tell was there really, just took off the speed limiter. Thats all.
Oh and just wondering, how does your car accelerate? Or are you just mainly conscerned with top end speed?

The chip is stock. I've owned the car for 5 yrs. It has always gone to 110 and that's it! The dam thing just kept going and I'm like WTF?
That's why I gassed on it last night to see if was for real. As far as acceleration, nothing fantastic though it shifts 1-2 2-3 at 4800. I didn't think the conv. would lock-up at full throttle in third but it does. I tried backing off full throttle at 120 and shift into 4th but it won't maintain 120 at part throttle any more and it down shifts to third.

To each there own, but in my eyes that is one of the reasons why i will never own an automatic car....
As for your new found top speed, if you are sure the chip is stock, I guess there is allways a chance that something got fired, maybe whatever the car had that actually stops the gas from injecting and letting the car go faster. Maybe that broke or something. No idea.
Either way, not really a "problem" per say, hehe.

it seems certain cars get limiters based on what tires are on them when they are assembled.
My 88 Formula had no limiter stock, so it probably had Z-rated tires when it was built.
Mine also had the 4th gear WOT upshift feature stock.

Did you buy your car new? Sounds like you got a special order with police package or something. A repro. chip and servo in the trans will do that.
If that's your car in the pic, how come it's leaning so much to the left? I race autocross and have pic's and video and in all of them, it's flat as a go cart. I cant even push either side of my front end down an inch. Not bashing your ride but just curious. looks dam good with the ram air and red paint! I see they made you take off the t/tops too. Puts you in the open cockpit catagory which specifies a full face helmet huh? My wife heard a spectater (and I mean tater) say "doesn't he know that causes more wind resistance?) I guess he thought I was drag racing around those cones.

Sounds like you need a new speedometer.
But seriously, the "shift" light was on? This shouldn't even come on with an automatic transmission. The same wire coming out of the ECM that goes to the TCC solenoid also goes to the shift light. Which end is hooked up depends on which trans is in the car. Was this car converted from manual to auto by chance?

It is my understanding that the shift light comes on w/auto trans converter locks up. I've been through this subject in the trans forum already and I've even tried the second gear manual lock up switch which turned it on as soon as I threw the switch on. My car hasn't been converted from manual.
From 80 mph. when I floor the pedal, it down shifts to 3rd and stays locked up and it passes the point where the speed limiter kicks in if I keep it floored.
If I back off the pedal and let it shift to 4th it will slow to 110. It might keep going passed 125 in 3rd but at that point it's turning 4500 rpm and I don't want to push my 150K mi. 305 to that point for very long as I would like to keep my little chevy rod's inside the block!
For the other guy that want's to loose the speed limiter, there's an article in the tech articles section on how to bypass it cheap.

There's a guy that used to have a site TBI CHIPS but I think he recently moved to Ebay as tpichips. His base line chip changes the fuel and timing curve and removes the speed limiter. He even has a phone # you can call for info and the chip price used to be cheaper than the "hyperjunk" (as refered to by several unsatisfied users on this site) chip. Might want to check it out. If you can't find it on Ebay, go to the tbi web site and he has a link to his chips on Ebay.
