setting timing on z28

ok heres my situation i replaced my igntion module because i was not getting spark now im getting spark and its running real rough below 2000 rpms, if i give it too much gas gas will shoot out of the carb i called mallory tech line and they told me it is most likely timing,

the last time that i took my car in to get it timed they charged 80$ but i looked around and found a timing light to be around 40$-60$ for a cheep one now im considering just buying a timing light and doing it myself but is that something i can do without having much experience doing it, i am completly wiling to learn o ya the car has a carb 1987 camaro z28 mallory unilite distributor msd blaster 2 ignition coil edelbrock carb, edelbrock manifold, and edelbrock air filter if any of this makes a difference in timing thank you

OK, so the computer controled carb and distributor are gone now, right?

If so, you just disconnect and plug the vacuum line going to your distributor's vacuum advance canister, idle the engine as low as it will reasonably go, and check your timing. ~12* BTDC would be a reasonable starting point, not knowing a lot about your combo- should get you in the realm of sanity at any rate. You can play with it from there.

Reconnect the vacuum advance line afterwards and set your final idle speed and idle mixture, obviously.

Yes- remove it and put a plug in it (in the end of the hose- not on the vacuum canister) so there is no vacuum leak there while setting the timing.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Leave the timing alone. If it was right before, and you haven't disturbed it, it hasn't changed. And therefore, changing it now, won't do anything except mess it up even worse.

Looking at that chaotic wad of plug wires you've got there, I'd put my bet on 2 of them being swapped. Specifically, #5 & #7.

Check their order carefully.
